Intermedia. Archivio di Nuova Scrittura
Intermedia. Archivio di Nuova Scrittura is an exhibition of works from the Museion collection. It pays homage to the collector Paolo Della Grazia, who gave the Archivio di Nuova Scrittura (ANS) to Museion in Bolzano and Mart in Rovereto in 1998 on a permanent loan basis. The exhibition was organized in cooperation with Mart, which is opening concurrently under the same title with a presentation of journals from the ANS archives and works by the artist Sarenco.
For the in-depth texts introducing the exhibition and its sections, the use of a digital signage made up of LCD screens was chosen, a symbol of contemporary communication and interpreting the concept of intermediality at the heart of the exhibition. This approach aims to generate a clear contrast with the written word that in the works of the Archivio di Nuova Scrittura is conveyed, for the most part by paper, which for millennia has represented the primary form of archiving and transmission of knowledge.
The screens, taking inspiration from the forms of commercial digital signage and the proliferation of digital devices in our lives, become the support for in-depth studies and detach themselves both from the usual (and solid) format of this kind of communication (pre-spaced on the wall, printing on physical supports) and from the very idea of printing, of the written word as we have known it for centuries (from Gutenberg until the end of the 20th century) and, in part, we still know it.
The main typography used is in motion and is consistent with the concept described, i.e. to generate contrast with the works on display. In this sense, the restyling project of the specimen and manuals of the Swedish company FACIT (similar to the Italian Olivetti) developed by the OPS Type studio and foundry in Amsterdam and Stockholm, fully interprets the presented direction: they are monospace fonts derived from the typewriter world, are based on drawings from the '60s and '70s as are mainly the works exhibited in the exhibition.
